Purple was one of the first mattress companies to join the bed in a box movement, even though it came in a bag. Purple released a video with its famous egg test that went viral and really brought a lot of awareness to the brand. It is probably one of the most unique mattresses in the space because of its polymer grid layer.
Construction of the original Purple Mattress
- Top Layer: 2” Hyper-Elastic Polymer™ material in Smart Comfort Grid™ Non-toxic polyethylene copolymer powder coating.
- Middle Layer: 3.5” 1.8 lbs density polyurethane foam.
- Base Layer: 4” 2.0 lbs density polyurethane foam.
Purple Mattress Firmness/motion transfer/edge support
Firmness- The Purple mattress is about a 6 for firmness. The polymer grid lets you sink a bit, but the middle foam layer stops you from bottoming out.
Motion Transfer- Motion transfer is slightly noticeable, you’d think it would move around more with the polymer gird, but its not bad at all.
Edge Support- The edge support on the purple mattress could be slightly better, but it does hold up fine.
Purple Mattress Cooling/Off gassing
Cooling- The Purple mattress offers great cooling. For a mattress that is primarily made up of foam, the purple remains cool throughout the night, the polymer gird does wonders.
Off Gassing- This mattress has slight off gassing, we still recommend airing the mattress out for 24 hours.
How many years will the Purple mattress last me?
The Purple mattress is made with some new ingredients, so it is really tough to say, but with the base being dense foam, it should last quite some time, probably in the 8-10 range.

Summary of the Purple Mattress
The original Purple mattress is truly one of the most unique in the marketplace, it uses ingredients we have never seen before in a mattress & people have really taking a liking to it. I do believe the mattress could be slightly firmer, side sleepers might sink a bit too much, but for back & stomach sleepers this mattress would be a great fit. It really provides the support you need and seems to soothe you. The Purple mattress is really cooling too, if you are a warm sleeper this is the mattress for you. We definitely recommend the Original Purple mattress.
